GPW celebrates 25 years of activity
– Time has come for Warsaw Stock Exchange to become a company supporting Polish economy and building further confidence towards the capital market in Poland – said Małgorzata Zaleska, the President of Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) on Tuesday, at a conference on 25th anniversary of the Warsaw exchange.
Exactly a quarter of a century ago, the founding act of Warsaw Stock Exchange was signed. Four days late, quotations of first five companies started. The opening session of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of GPW in Warsaw was attended, inter alia, by President Andrzej Duda, Minister of Treasury, Dawid Jackiewicz and the President of GPW, prof. Małgorzata Zaleska.
During the Tuesday ceremony President Andrzej Duda convinced that the Polish exchange should support innovative enterprises.
– Since preparation of innovations is associated with uncertainty. Therefore, the exchange should provide great opportunities for such entrepreneurs. At the same time, it will be a development opportunity for Poland - explained the President. He congratulated former presidents of GPW and investors. - In 1991 Poland and the Poles started to learn from the scratch how the capital market operates. I would like to congratulate former presidents of GPW, investors and presidents of listed companies. Our exchange today is the fourth exchange in Europe, a definite leader in our part of Europe. It is fantastic. Let us act so that we could become a leader of the economy in this part of Europe. It is a very serious task - the President added.
– As a representative of the major owner of the exchange, i.e. the State Treasury, I would like to ensure firmly that the Polish state will support the exchange – indicated Minister Dawid Jackiewicz. – Warsaw Stock Exchange is not an ordinary company which should only generate profits. It is a key artery of the economic bloodstream of Poland. I am also convinced that the Warsaw exchange, already today an unquestionable leader in our region, will strengthen its position of the first choice exchange for great investors and issuers who believe in the potential of Central and Eastern Europe - stressed the Minister.
During the ceremony symbolic unveiling of the new exchange bell in the GPW Hall of Listings took place. The exchange bell cast in bronze is a gift of the oldest bell casting workshop in Poland, a bell foundry of Janusz and Maciej Felczyński.
